Universal Records is proud to present Noel Cabangon’s latest album “Panaginip” featuring the launching single of the same title. The album is the follow-up to Cabangon’s previous album and first under Universal Records “Byahe”, which stayed as the number one album in major record stores for 17 weeks en route to being certified Platinum. Panaginip boasts of 15 tracks consisting of 4 covers and 11 original compositions of Cabangon. The album was recorded at Sound Creation with major musical arrangers Bob Aves, Fred Garcia, Ria Villena-Osorio, Simon Tan and Ito Rapadas.

The album was inspired by Sting’s performance with the Royal Philharmonic in Berlin. “People tend to know me more as an acoustic performer,” says Cabangon. “This time, this album is mostly done with a full band with orchestral arrangements.”

Why “Panaginip” as the album title? “Dahil lahat ng kanta ay nagmumula sa imahinasyon. Ang mga awit ay tula, ang mga tula ay awit. Ang mga awit ay likha ng malayang panaginip. Ang panaginip ay likha ng malayang isip,” says Cabangon. “Ang pag-iimagine ay malaya, wala naming nagbabawal sa iyo.” While it may appear that “Byahe” turned to be the biggest selling album of Cabagon’s career mainly because of the great cover songs, Cabangon bravely takes the road less traveled with an album comprised mainly of original songs.

“It’s a bit risky, kasi sa panahon ngayon ‘in’ pa rin ang covers”, says Cabangon. “Byahe” was an overwhelming success because the advantage was it had very familiar songs. But Universal Records is behind me. It is called “Panaginip” because it’s a challenge for a songwriter is for his creation to be heard. Kailangan tayo gumawa ng bagong originals. We have to move forward and write more songs. For the songs in this album hinahanap ko yung elegance ng mga hit songs. As songwriters, we need to challenge ourselves into creating a brilliant concept and to become brilliant songwriters na di natin makita sa mga new songs, walang sophistication and elegance. We should try to write lyrics that are poetic without becoming too deep. We need to challenge our listeners. Kailangan makadagdag na rin tayo to the rich anthology ng Philippine music.”

Noteworthy original songs include collaborations with former Sugarfree frontman Ebe Dancel (“Hulog Ka ng Langit”) and Diamond soul siren Nina (“Ikaw Na Sana”). Other impressive new songs include the aforementioned title track “Panaginip”, as well as “Dahan Dahan”, “Bayani ng Bayan”, “Ngayon ang Bagong Simula”, the hip-hop flavored “Walang Katulad” and the haunting “Awit ng Naghahanap”, a heart-wrenching tune inspired by victims of political killings. Three longtime original songs from Noel Cabangon are also included in the album (“Sana Dumating Ka na”, “Dahil Nariyan Ka” and the ’80s inspired “Umuulan sa Tag-araw, Umaaraw sa Tag-Ulan”).

Of course, the covers are still there: “Bulag, Pipi, Bingi” (Grand prize song of the 2nd Metropop Music Festival, originally performed by Freddie Aguilar), the Heber Bartolome classic “Tayo’y Mga Pinoy”, “Tag-Ulan” by Lolita & The Boys and the Pete Lacaba/Ding Achacoso-written “Sangandaan”, which gained attention from the Mike De Leon classic film “Sister Stella L”.

With his new album, Noel Cabangon is once again ready to sing about us and his dreams for all of us.

“This album encapsulates my dreams for my country, my fellowmen and my friends,” says Cabangon. “It’s one big challenge to do well primarily on original songs but this is one of the challenges that is worth working hard for, para mabigyan buhay ang bayan.”

“Panaginip” Tracklisting:

Now on its sixth year, the Philippine International Jazz Festival is in full swing with over 60 artists from here and abroad.

Organized by the Philippine International Jazz and Arts Festival Foundation, the festival is aimed at people from all walks of life, with shows in various venues including crowded malls and intimate lounges.

Since its opening night on February 3, the festival has had a full schedule of jazz acts at campuses, shopping areas, and night spots.

<img src="http://blogs.gmanews.tv/kapuso-mo-jessica-soho/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/noelcabangon.jpg" width="240" height="320" align="left" alt"Noel Cabangon is one of the performers at the Philippine International Jazz Festival.">

“Jazz grows within and outside the walls of social status… there is no rich or poor jazz artist,” the organizers say on their official site.

Noel Cabangon is one of the performers at the Philippine International Jazz Festival.
While some shows are free and open to the public, others cost P3,000 while others still are by invitation only. But wherever the festival is, audiences are sure to enjoy the shows.

“Jazz performances are always positive – neither loud nor sad, always colorful and introspective,” the organizers add.

Most of the gigs are in Metro Manila, while some take place in Bacolod and Boracay from February 12-19.

For those unavailable after office hours, there are a few events during the day, like the “Jazz for Kids” last Sunday at the Alphaland Southgate Mall.

A bar and lounge Jazz Series is also being held at Salon de Ning, O’Lounge, and Charlie’s Speakeasy.

On February 13, David Starck Latin, Henry Katindig and Doug Little will be playing for Latin Night at Salon de Ning.

On the same night, Aisaku Yokogawa and Monet Ganir will be playing alongside Working Stiff and Sitti at “Love Sitti” at Bonifacio High Street in Taguig.

Also on February 13 is Jazz at O’Lounge with Alakpa and Hidden Nikki at the Oxford Suites in Makati.

On February 14, Ateneo de Manila will be hosting a Sax Workshop by Doug Little at 3:00 p.m.

This year’s lineup includes Johnny Alegre, Richard Merk, Sitti, Nyko Maca, the A.M.P. Big Band, Guarana, and the UP Jazz Ensenble.

Also featured are balikbayan artists Mishka Adams, Johnny and Rosanna Gaerlan, Carlos Zialcita, and Boy Katindig. Among the international acts are Gong Myoung, Logic, Fourplay, Tierney Sutton, and Hubert Laws.

As the festival draws to a close, Rockwell Tent features Fourplay with Bob James, Nathan East, Chuck Loeb and Harver Mason on February 26.

On February 27, Hubert Laws with Debra Laws perform, as well as Richard Merk, Jacqui Magno, Pat Castillo and Ric Ickard.

The last night, Feb. 28, is the International Jazz Gala at the Ayala Museum featuring various Filipino and international Artists. Rickie Quirino will also launch his book “Contemporary Jazz,” while Nino Quartana will hold a painting exhibit. – Carmela G.
If there is one thing about Noel Cabangon, he isn't unprofessional. Of course, he walked right past me, and I took the advantage of my anonymity to observe him.

By CARMELA LAPEÑA, GMANews.TV

It was a Wednesday night at Conspiracy along Visayas Avenue in Quezon City. Almost 9, but still early for the gig and so far, no tables were occupied. I was waiting for Noel Cabangon to arrive, and wondering what was meant by “I won’t arrive ’til nine.” Those were his words in his text message earlier that day, when I had asked if I could interview him at his gig. Would I interview him before his set? Or after? How would I approach him?

Those questions made me nervous, not to mention the other questions I had in mind. After all, he had recently sung in front of half a million people, stealing the show at PNoy’s inauguration. Not only did he get the crowd to sing along – he also got several important officials, including the president, to swear they would be better Filipinos. I didn’t have much time to dwell on my anxiety, because he walked in shortly, right on time.

If there is one thing about Noel Cabangon, he isn’t unprofessional. Of course, he walked right past me, and I took the advantage of my anonymity to observe him. He moved quietly but quickly, as if not a single step was wasted. He was dressed simply, in an unassuming dark- colored shirt and jeans, and his trademark sneakers. He had brightly colored bracelets on his arm.

He moved from room to room, setting up while talking to someone on his cellphone. Eventually, I mustered the courage to approach him and introduce myself. He asked if I minded waiting until after his set. Of course I didn’t, and looked forward to watching the set. Although his impressive tour history includes France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland, as well as places all over the Philippines both as a solo act and with his former group Buklod, his usual gigs are like the one that night, in low-key bars and nightclubs, where the stage is really just a slightly, if at all, elevated area of the room.

Tables were barely visible beneath the weight of empty and near empty bottles, plates of pulutan, and elbows of customers propping up their faces as they gaze intently at the performer. Noel Cabangon seemed perfectly at ease in this set up, perched on his stool a bit awkwardly and yet perfectly balanced. He balances his guitar on his leg and reaches for his beer bottle on the floor.

He raises the bottle to the audience, laughs a bit and says “Cheers for fears,” before drinking quickly, setting it back down, and beginning the song.

He goes through his laidback set, engaging the audience in pleasant conversation. While his larger concerts have the benefit of bigger sound systems, his performances in small spaces are more charming. His powerful voice fills the room, and without much to distract the audience, his lyrics stand out. Some requests are made and he obliges gladly, a performer through and through.

He plays Kanlungan, an obvious favorite which gets almost everyone in the room to sit up straight. When he plays Tatsulok, he jokes that it’s a Bamboo cover. The song is actually an original by Buklod. He ends his first set, tells the audience he’ll be back, and mills around for a bit. He taps me on the shoulder and says, “Wait lang a, five minutes,” and then he disappears into another room.
